What to do With Poo When SHTF

February 23, 2022 by David 4 Comments

There is a lot to think about when planning for potential disaster scenarios.

Do I have enough food and access to clean water? What about backup power and heating? Understandably, these are some of the top prepping concerns.

But have you ever considered what you’ll do with your poo when the–uh–stuff hits the proverbial fan? If you live in an off-grid or other scenario where waste is sanitarily disposed via a septic system, then you’re good to go.

But the vast majority of people are used to having their fecal matter conveniently flushed down a public sewage system. For these folks, figuring out how to deal with poop and pee in a disaster situation will soon become a top priority.

Human Waste can Quickly Spread Disease

You don’t have to look very hard anywhere disasters strike to see that diseases rapidly spread when sanitation is lacking. Whether from an earthquake knocking out power (and thus no running water) or refugees fleeing a war zone, untreated human waste is a primary agent of illness.

Cholera, hepatitis and typhoid are just some of the nasty illnesses that can be spread by improper sanitation methods. Needless to say, there will be enough to worry about in a SHTF scenario without adding disease into the mix.

Changing Your Mindset Regarding Poo

Those of us who are parents likely remember when we first started handling dirty diapers. The smell, the appearance–even the texture–of baby poo was a bit stomach-churning for most.

But with time, holding our noses while wiping the stuff off a smooth baby butt soon became second nature. After all, it’s just a little (or sometimes a lot) of poo, which is the normal and natural end product of digestion.

And it’s in viewing excrement as a neutral substance–rather than a mortal enemy–that progress with poo will more quickly be made.

The key resource needed to properly deal with poo in a SHTF scenario is not a big holding tank but instead is biological material such as sawdust and dirt.

Compost Your Poo When SHTF

Nearly all gardeners use some type of compost to add nutrient-rich matter to their soil. This compost can be made up of all types of materials, usually plant parts such as leaves and grass. But animal manure (usually cow but chicken, rabbit and goat) may also be composted and actually makes one of the richest composts.

While most of us find the thought of composting human excrement to be incredibly icky, this practice has gained ground in recent years. And in a SHTF scenario, it could solve two really important issues: what to do with your poo, and how to nourish garden soil when commercial fertilizer is unavailable.

How to Compost Human Poo

As mentioned, there’s been a growing trend to turn human excrement into compost. This end product is sometimes called “humanure,” and there’s even been a book written about it!

The bottom-line (pun intended) idea is to turn your waste into a biodegradable renewable resource. Here are the basic steps involved with composting human poo.

📌 Save for later! 📌

how to compost poop

The first step with composting human poo is having a way to collect it.

While some human poo composters have fancy composting toilets, the most common collection device is a plain five-gallon plastic bucket. You can create a makeshift toilet seat for the bucket by cutting a foam swimming noodle to a length equal to the circumference of the bucket top, then cutting half-way into the piece lengthwise. Finally, fit the modified swim noodle piece onto the bucket as a cushy for your tushie. You can also buy premade seats for convenience.

Before using your bucket for the first time, put a layer of high-carbon organic plant matter (such as wood shavings, sawdust, shredded paper, or mulch) in the bottom. Ideally this matter should be composed of different-sized materials for the best aeration. Keep a bucket filled with this material near your poo bucket and add another layer of matter each time after you go. Keep the bucket covered when not in use.

When doing your business, it’s best to keep pee out of the poop bucket (toilet paper is fine and don’t worry if some pee makes it in there). Pee is actually sterile and is fine to pour outside as fertilizer for your lawn.

Put your new poo in a compost bin or large trash can

Once your bucket is nearly full, it’s time to take it outside (with the lid tightly sealed, of course). The two most popular options for turning poo into finished compost are a compost bin or a large plastic trash can with wheels.

You can create a makeshift compost bin by placing wood pallets upright, forming a square. Use twine, wire or zip ties to hold the pallets together.

Another option for composting is to use a large (the bigger the better) plastic trash can with wheels. If you go this route, you’ll need to drill a hole near the bottom of the can to allow drainage of excess fluid (installing a spigot is ideal).

How to layer your compost bin or trash can

Before adding your first bucket of poo, put a layer of sticks on the bottom of the compost bin or trash can, then some dry material such as leaves or straw. If using a trash can, you’ll also wants to loosely tie together a small but long bundle of sticks inserted vertically into one corner of the can to promote aeration.

The layering process is fairly forgiving but basically involves a bottom layer of sticks, a layer of dry plant material, a bucket of poo, and a layer of plant material such as leaves, dry grass, cardboard, or kitchen scraps. You’ll want to dig in and form a “crater” in the center of the compost bin in which you pour the poo bucket each time, then cover the new deposit with pre-existing compost material.

What is an EMP? And is it Dangerous?

Don’t turn or otherwise disturb the compost material other than scraping back the top layer when adding new buckets of poo.

If the pile seems too dry, you can add some pee or graywater. Compost forms best when adequately moist but not drenched. If the pile is too damp, add more dry material.

After emptying your poo bucket, add a little water and liquid soap to the bucket and swipe it out with a toilet brush, then repeat the process.

If pests are an issue with your bin, put a wire cover over it.

If all of this seems too complicated, you can always buy a ready-to-use composting toilet!

How long does it take for compost to form?

Placing your compost bin or trash can in a warm location will accelerate the process of microbes breaking down the poo and plant material, turning them into rich compost that can be used for gardening. It is important that the stuff get hot enough long enough to kill any potentially bad pathogens that could be lurking around. A compost thermometer is perfect for monitoring the temperature.

There is no hard and fast rule as to how long it takes compost to form. Things like outdoor air temperature, rain amounts, and the types of plant matter used all affect how quickly the compost material will become ready to use in your garden. A general guideline is that it takes about one year to make sure the compost gets thoroughly heated enough to kill any bad bugs, then cools and goes through the natural decomposition process of making usable compost.

Final thoughts

Knowing how to handle human excrement in a SHTF situation can make all the difference between staying healthy and succumbing to waste-borne diseases. While not everyone may be in a situation to compost their poo, this option will be viable and practical for many people.

Whether you choose to compost poo in a standalone bin or in a garbage can, doing so will both take care of a potential waste problem and also provide valuable soil enrichment for gardens when commercial fertilizers are not available.

Coconut: The Ultimate Prepping Food?

February 22, 2022 by David 4 Comments

You have a lot of choices when it comes to food storage items. Here we go over the reasons why coconut is one of the very best food choices for preppers.

Different preppers can have a variety of goals with food storage. Some focus on maximizing shelf life, others emphasize low cost, and some go only for highly nutritious foods.

One of the best things about coconut is that it can tick most or all of the boxes to satisfy the requirements of preppers.

Coconut has an Excellent Shelf Life

A top concern for preppers is obtaining foods that last a long time. After all, what’s the point of food storage if something’s going to quickly go bad?

Here’s one of the areas where coconut really shines! Coconut in its various forms tends to have a really good shelf life. This is largely due to its saturated fat content. Of all the types of fasts, saturated fats are the most stable and least likely to oxidize or go rancid.

Coconuts naturally contain a range of fatty acids such as lauric acid and caprylic acid. These fatty acids have antimicrobial properties that can as as natural preservatives, keeping coconut products fresh longer.

Estimates vary on how long different coconut products may last. However, based on our research and personal experience, here are some reasonable shelf life figures for popular coconut products:

  • Coconut Oil. Coconut oil comes in two forms, refined (non-virgin) and unrefined (virgin). Virgin coconut oil is the most shelf stable and has a minimum shelf life of 3 years from production, with some users reporting their virgin oil that’s five years old still smelling and tasting fresh. Refined coconut oil has a shorter shelf life of 2 to 3 years. Liquid coconut oil has some of the fatty acids removed to keep it liquid at cool temperatures. It has a considerably shorter life than regular coconut oil, which is solid when cold.
  • Dried Coconut. Dried or desiccated coconut products such as flakes and shreds are made from the coconut meat. They go through a heating process to remove moisture. Because moisture is the number one enemy of food longevity, dried coconut tends to be very shelf stable. Some reports suggest a shelf life of only 6 to 12 months. This shorter life likely applies to the sweetened bagged coconut commonly found in grocery stores. Pure dried coconut is less moist, not sweetened, and can last 3 years or more when stored in low-humidity environment in a sealed container.
  • Coconut Flour. This product is made from finely ground coconut meat and is dried to remove moisture. Like dried coconut, it stays good for 2 to 3 years when stored in a sealed container in a low-moisture environment.
  • Coconut Butter. Similar in consistency to nut butters, coconut butter is made from ground coconut meat and has a much higher oil content than dried coconut and coconut flour. Because of the high amounts of saturated fat, it is one of the most shelf stable nut butters, lasting 3+ years.
  • Coconut Milk Powder. Made from dehydrated coconut milk, this product also boasts an impressive shelf life of 2-3 years. It is sensitive to moisture and stores best at room temperatures and very low humidity.
  • Canned Coconut Milk. Another shelf stable item, canned coconut milk lasts 3+ years.

Coconut is one of the Most Nutritious Foods

Few foods can rival coconut when it comes to being a nutritional powerhouse.

Several features of coconut are unique in nature and qualify it as one of the most perfect foods. Fresh raw coconuts contain protein, carbs, fiber, fat and minerals. Quite an impressive nutritional accomplishment!

Although for years some elements of the medical community demonized coconut products as unhealthy due to saturated fat content, it’s now recognized that coconut can be a very valuable part of a healthy diet.

Some of the many benefits of consuming coconut include heart health, weight loss, and immune support. Coconut oil is even thought to have a role in treating brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s!

Because obtaining and storing fresh coconuts is out of the reach of most of us, obtaining high-quality processed coconut products is the best alternative.

Of all the available coconut products, coconut butter is one of the better options in terms of health benefits. It contains not only a sizeable amount of ground coconut meat but also significant quantities of coconut oil. This provides the advantages of both the meat and the oil in a single item.

Coconut Products can be Affordable

Preppers who look for the cheapest possible food items probably won’t go for coconut. But by shopping around, you can still find some really good deals on an assortment of coconut products.

As with any product, buying in bulk provides the best savings. For coconut oil, look for larger five-gallon sizes for the maximum bang for your buck. Although the initial investment is more, the cost per pound will almost always be less with larger sized items.

Coconut butter is typically not available in the same size as bulk coconut oil. But you can still look for bigger quart jars and buy them in bulk when possible.

Another option for buying discounted coconut products is using a buying club. These clubs offer either online delivery or in-person delivery through a bulk truck drop off (or both).

Our favorite buying club is Azure Standard. With this buying club you can purchase things like dried coconut, coconut flour and more!

And don’t forget to shop local scratch and dent, Asian market, or health food stores where you can sometimes find good deals on coconut products.

Of course, if all else fails, there is always Amazon.

Final Thoughts on Coconut as the Ultimate Prepping Food

Preppers looking for nutritious food storage items that have a long shelf life and are affordable should take a close look at coconut.

Readily available as coconut oil, dried coconut, and more, this food is one of the best choices available to shore up your prepper pantry.

Shopping at Dollar Tree for Prepping Supplies

February 19, 2022 by David 10 Comments

Let’s face it: prepping can be expensive! Every dollar saved is an extra dollar you can use to buy more supplies. That’s why it only makes sense to shop for prepping supplies at discount stores like Dollar Tree.

Here we share a recent shopping trip to our local Dollar Tree and some of the awesome prepping supplies we found!

The last several months have seen some crazy inflation, with financial forecasts showing no end in sight. While Dollar Tree has long been known as the “everything’s a dollar store,” they’ve announced that due to inflation some items will now cost more than a dollar.

But even at $1.25, most of the prices at Dollar Tree are usually better than you’ll find at other stores like Wal-Mart.

Recently the team here at Prepping World took a trip to the local Dollar Tree to see what kind of prepping items we could find. We weren’t disappointed! Here are some of the cool prepper and survival items we found.

Dollar Tree Prepping Tools and Hardware

Dollar Tree has an impressive assortment of inexpensive hardware tools. From hammers and screwdrivers to padlocks and utility knives, these are some of the most useful prepping items you can find.

You’ll want to look elsewhere if you need heavy-duty tools that will stand up to long-term use. But for everyday basic tools, you’ll want to pick up one (or two, or three) of each type to store in your prepping cache.

You’ll definitely want to get an assortment of carabiner clips. These clips are perfect for attaching to belt loops, backpacks and more, and are a great choice for prepping projects.

You can also find paracords and different types of rope at Dollar Tree. It goes without saying that rope can be one of the most useful items for any type of prepping or survival situation.

Dollar Tree Prepping Storage Containers

It’s hard to have too many storage containers. Whether you’re storing food, tools, seeds, ammo, or anything else, having a good supply of different sized storage boxes is a great idea.

Dollar Tree has a really good selection of storage boxes and bins. From tool boxes that are perfect for stashing and organizing all kinds of prepping supplies, to see-through plastic boxes that allow for easy identification of the contents, to mini organizers with drawers, you can’t go wrong with stocking up on these items.

Some of the most useful storage items are plastic organizer cases. These cases usually have nine compartments that are perfect for holding things like screws, air rifle pellets, or other small items.

You can also find open baskets and bins for items that don’t need to be stored in a closed box.

Dollar Tree Prepping Batteries

Whether or not the electrical power goes out, having a stash of batteries is a must. To keep your flashlights and radios going, you’ll need an abundant supply of the most common battery sizes D, C, AA and AAA.

While some preppers prefer rechargeable batteries, they are more expensive and require a way to recharge them, which can be a challenge if the grid is down.

pantry plus bundle

Dollar Tree has a respectable selection of disposable batteries. The quality isn’t quite up to the same standards as well-known brands like Duracell or Energizer, so they won’t last as long, but the price is definitely more affordable.

Dollar Tree Light Bulbs and Flashlights

If the electrical grid goes down, you’ll need a way to provide light to your home.

You can find a good assortment of lighting products at Dollar Tree. From various sizes and lumens of flashlights, to desk lamps and self-adhesive LED lights, these are some of the most important prepping supplies you’ll want to get.

They even have LED head lamps, lanterns, and compact works lights, which can all be useful when you’re doing a project where you need your hands to be free.

And don’t forget to stock up on light bulbs. The newer LED bulbs can last for years and could be hard to come by in the event of social breakdown and upheaval.

Dollar Tree Prepping Lighters and Matches

Having a way to start a fire can be one of the most important needs in a prepping/survival situation.

Dollar Tree has you covered here with a selection of matches and lighters. Matches are good for starting a fire where a lighter isn’t ideal such as igniting a flammable liquid.

Both disposable and refillable lighters are available. The refillable ones use butane, which you will need to purchase elsewhere.

Dollar Tree Pepping First Aid Supplies

Be sure not to overlook the selection of first aid and health-related items at Dollar Tree!

Products like hydrogen peroxide, bandages, hand sanitizer, dental hygiene and much more are available, although sometimes in short supply, possibly due to all the people who are stocking up these days.

Baking soda is another “must have” item that can be used both for health purposes (as an antacid or alkalizer) and in food preparation.

Dollar Tree Prepping Food Items

Food storage is one of the biggest priorities in prepping. Shopping at Dollar Tree can help you build up your food stores without breaking the bank.

From shelf-stable milk, to canned meats, to crackers and nuts, you can find all kinds of affordable food items at Dollar Tree.

You’ll want to think in terms of shelf life, which means canned goods are your best bet for long-term food prepping.

Other Prepping Items at Dollar Tree

In addition to all of the items outlined above, you can find some other great prepping supplies at Dollar Tree. Items such as extension cords, super glue, trash bags, tarps, can openers, and duct tape are all valuable to include in your prepping stash.

My local Dollar Tree also recently had HandiHeat cans of 2.4 hour chafing fuel.

No doubt we’ve missed an item or two that is available at Dollar Tree. Have you found any other great prepping finds at your local Dollar Tree store?
